Cebs The Anglican Boys Society

Newsletter-Winter 2007

Social Get Together:

The first Cebs Social get together in November, for past and current members and families 2006, was at Emmanuel Anglican Church Park Orchards and attracted a small group of participants.

The second Cebs Social get together in  March 2007 was an enjoyable afternoon held at Cebs Camp Bindaree at Woori Yallock. Weather that afternoon was a bit hot for comfort but feed back from past and present members of Cebs and their families who attended were pleased to meet up with everyone again and enjoy a meal together.

Doug Calvert conducted a short service of thanksgiving immediately before we enjoyed a dinner of cold meats, chicken, cooked sausages, salads and sweets of trifle, pavlova, a peppermint cake, fresh berries and ice cream.

An opportunity was taken to view the campsite and the many improvements undertaken in recent times. Many thanks to all who attended and to Jenny Wright who arranged the catering.

The next event will be held at St Phillips Mt Waverley on Saturday 20th October from 12:00 noon till 3:00pm, with a meal at 1:15pm.

We are updating our mailing list so that many of our ex members can receive information on the next get together. If you know of any past members that may want to receive information about Cebs, please forward their contact details to the secretary, Bruce Anderson. (see contact details at the end of this newsletter).

2. Support of Cebs branches

A total of $2500 was distributed to registered Cebs or affiliated groups to assist them with their ministry.

Annual grants are available to registered Cebs branches. Grants of $500 for a group up to 20 members and $25 per member for groups of 21 and above. These grants can be used as the branch wishes to promote their ministry to boys.

Remember by registering your branch for just $30 you automatically receive a $500 grant!!! So why not consider registering your group?

Registration enquiries can be directed to Bruce Anderson. (Contact details at the end of this newsletter.)

Registered branches have the use of Cebs Camp Bindaree for half price.

New groups are given a set of the Safety Guidelines published by the Education department and shall be used with the guidelines “Sowing the Seeds of Care” published by the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne for all parish based groups and their activities.

Membership enquiries can be directed to Bruce Anderson.

Over 70 boys, girls, leaders and parents from Melbourne and Gippsland Branches enjoyed a day out at Luna Park in June which was sponsored by Cebs Melbourne.

3. Cebs Camp Bindaree

The provision our campsite Cebs Camp Bindaree to groups at  very economic rates is an important focus. Many groups use the camp including Cebs and GFS groups, Children’s groups, Alpha groups, disadvantaged and disabled groups and their helpers, various church, community, youth and small groups, family groups and hiking groups.

Plans have been prepared and Cebs executive has given the go ahead to provide additional and improved accommodation at the campsite. The diocese has now given approval in principle for us to proceed with the project.

Numerous small jobs have taken place at the campsite this year with the buildings being currently repainted. The newly renovated games building was attacked by termites and was a costly repair.

4. Cebs Financial Base

Rebuilding our financial base is important to Cebs Melbourne so that we are in a strong financial position to take advantage of ministry opportunities that come along in the future. An improved financial base will help us to provide a more effective Christian ministry to boys and young men.

Executive was pleased with the performance of funds deposited in the Balanced Growth Fund which is administered by the Melbourne Diocese Anglican Development Fund Organisation.

5. Melbourne Diocese and Cebs

Building relationships with the Melbourne Diocese is important to Cebs Melbourne. We hope to be able to partner more with the Diocese and other players to help provide stronger Christian ministry to groups in Melbourne in areas such as purpose designed camping programs.  Cebs Melbourne has offered to sponsor a number of delegates who may wish to attend the Mission Based Youth Conference in Melbourne later this year.

National Camp to be held in Sydney 2008

Tent ClipartThe next Cebs national camp will be hosted by Sydney where Sydney Diocese plan  to relaunch boys ministry nationally with Rev’d Barry Costello developing programs for the camp. Groups are looking towards the 14th National camp in Sydney in 2008.

Branches

Doncaster branch meets twice weekly during the school terms with the primary school boys meeting on a Wednesday evening and Secondary school boys meeting on a Tuesday evening.

The branch, operating with voluntary leaders, had 40 registered members and this year welcomed several boys who have come to Australia from South Korea and have actively joined in the branch programs.

New equipment was purchased with funds from the automatic grant a group receives when they register with Cebs.

Three camps were held throughout the year with the junior boys camping at Cebs Camp Bindaree at Woori Yallock and the senior group camping at Tidal River during April. The annual four wheel drive camp planned for just before Christmas in the High country had to be cancelled because of the fires in the area. The camp was switched to Tidal River which is always popular with the boys.

The final night of the year we joined with the girls group and invited parents and children to a dinner prepared by the church catering Committee, 100 people attended the dinner followed by a service in the church.

A calendar with a page for each month of 2007 featuring photos of many of the activities held throughout 2006 was presented to each boy.

Unfortunately we farewelled Murray Knight from our leadership team. He retired after nine years of service as a leader. Taking his place we welcomed Matthew Stephens who will take up leadership with the junior group.

Thanks are expressed to the voluntary leadership team who willingly give of their time, talents and treasure including a slice of their annual leave from their work to assist the development of the boys.

Ormond

2006 saw the ongoing ministry of the Anglican Parish of Ormond to boys continue through Cebs. We have enjoyed a stable attendance with a number of parish boys, as well as friends who don’t normally come to church.

We have been providing a varied range of activities for the boys this year, allowing “boys to be boys” while being a part of a fun, challenging, and fulfilling Christian environment.

Our program has been many and varied this year including Commonwealth Games, 5 Senses, Woodwork, Craft, Incredible Night, Space, Weather, Footy, Car Racing, Quiz Night, Puppets, the environment and a really Messy night. These are just a few of the fun and challenging activities we do in a safe, Christian environment. We enjoyed a free day at Luna Park sponsored by Cebs Melbourne. We also have an under canvas camp coming up in December

Bacchus Marsh

KidsPlus: A year after we brought the GFS and Cebs groups together to form KidsPlus Bacchus Marsh, we are starting to settle into a rhythm of sorts. Lilian Morgan and Yvonne Round have finished up with the groups after decades of service to both in Bacchus Marsh.

We have around 10-15 regular Primary aged students every Monday evening with activities, Bible stories, memory verses and Missions updates. We support local CRE programs where the students cannot afford the materials, fundraise for Missions in the Northern Territory and are looking at a camp in 2007.

All in all things are looking very exciting! Steve Weickhardt.

Some Cebs History

The following article is on the Melbourne Tigers website and is partly reproduced for your information:

Melbourne Junior Basketball Club History

The Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Club History
Senior Men’s basketball teams began playing in the 1920's in local church halls around Melbourne. The Melbourne club has been around since the beginning of Victorian Basketball and has always been at, or near the top of the ladder in VBA first division men’s competitions which have been run since 1931.

The Melbourne senior men's club has its origins in the St Luke’s team from North Fitzroy. Where Basketball games were played at St Luke’s hall from 1924. The name of the club has gone through an evolution process where the club changed from St Luke’s to Church of England, to becoming Church. It then became Melbourne Church and finally in 1975 the club decided to change its name to Melbourne Tigers. This was felt to better represent the players playing for the club, and thus give it a name that all could follow.

The Junior Boys’ Club originated from the Saturday night CEBS (Church of England Boys Society) competition run at Albert Park from 1959 on. Junior girls’ basketball was not played until 1968.

The CEBS competition was a collection of Church parishes playing in a Basketball competition at Albert Park stadium on Saturday nights. Representative teams were formed from this competition and entered into the Friday night Victorian Junior Men’s Basketball competition. This founding competition had only under 18 and 16 teams playing.

The CEBS competition folded in 1970, but in recent years, the Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Association has been running competitions at Albert Park for the local under 10, 12 and 14 boys and girls on Saturday nights.
